Thunder Over Louisville 2018
Thunder Over Louisville 2018

Thunder over Louisville 2018

Each year, Louisville locals and tourists alike look forward to spring, which signals the kick-off to the Kentucky Derby. This all-day extravaganza features the Thunder over Louisville Air Show and the #1 largest firework display in North America.

Thunder over Louisville draws approximately a half of a million people annually who thrill in Derby season’s exciting and grand celebration.

What You Need to Know
History –
The first official Thunder over Louisville was held in 1989. “Thunder” comes from the boom sound and echo of the glorious fireworks. In terms of pyrotechnics, Zambelli Fireworks Internationale has been mastering them since 1991.

Theme –
This year’s Thunder over Louisville 2018 theme is called “A Disco Thunder”.

Date and Time –
The 29th Annual Show will take place on April 21st, 2018. This is an all-day affair, with Thunder on the Ground opening at 11 AM, an incredible Airshow at 3 PM and the spectacular fireworks display at 9 PM.

Where –
Thunder over Louisville 2018 will take place downtown at the Louisville Riverfront, Waterfront Park, River Road, and Southern Indiana Shoreline. Come early and pick a perfect spot on the North Great Lawn (opens at 9 AM). Waterfront Park opens from 11 AM – 11 PM. The Meijer Family Fun Zone is on Belvedere.
Admission is free to all these locations with a Pegasus Pin.
1 River Road, Louisville, KY 40202

Tip –
Buy a Pegasus Pin at one of your participating local retailers. Yes, over 60% of the events are free to the public, but the Pegasus Pin gets you the best views of the Thunder over Louisville Airshow and carte blanche to everything. For that $7 – $10 Pin, you can enjoy live music, a river walk, and an extra assortment of food trucks with less waiting time. Worth it.

Weather and Rain Date –
This event has never been canceled, regardless of rain. If there is high wind or heavy rain, they will delay the fireworks until it passes. The good news if it rains is that the crowds shrink. The good news if it doesn’t rain is that the weather will be idyllic. Either way, it’s a definite must-see, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Activities –
This great event features fun activities for all ages, including a bounce house for the kids, food and alcohol vendors, t-shirts, light sticks, souvenirs, carnival fun, live music, a breathtaking airshow, and phenomenal fireworks.
